La ausencia de medidas preventivas eficaces, la necesidad de adoptar el aislamiento social como forma de evitar que la epidemia avance, aflige las economías de todo el mundo. Con la caída de la actividad económica, escasez de empleo y la disminución de los ingresos familiares, mayor entre los más pobres. Las políticas de emergencia adoptadas por los gobiernos han sido insuficientes para remediar los problemas enfrentados, especialmente en Brasil, con las políticas sociales ya debilitadas. En este escenario, la atención se centra en la Economía Solidaria, históricamente comprometida con segmentos en situación de vulnerabilidad, considerada una estrategia eficaz para enfrentar el desempleo y la pobreza. Sin embargo, la estructura de apoyo a estas iniciativas también ha sufrido por el abandono de las políticas sociales por parte de los gobiernos neoconservadores, en un momento de creciente demanda de apoyo. Incluso ante dificultades como la falta de recursos y la imposibilidad de realizar actividades presenciales, organizaciones como las incubadoras universitarias han logrado reinventar su desempeño con la eventual ayuda de los gobiernos y otras entidades locales en la construcción de redes de solidaridad, indispensables para mantener alguna dignidad y esperanza junto a la población en peor situación socioeconómica. Este principio, entendido a partir de las obras seminales de Karl Polanyi y Marcel Mauss, lleva a los colectivos a la condición de agentes antinómicos y alternativos al escenario establecido por el sistema económico dominante, cuyo rasgo más destacado es la producción sistemática de crisis, con efectos nocivos soportados por la sociedad. Al sostener estas experiencias, la reciprocidad rivaliza con el principio de intercambio, subyacente a la sociedad de mercado, y abre el camino a configuraciones en las que la economía sea un medio para realizar las aspiraciones humanas.
